Hamish Morrison is delighted to present an exhibition by the Swedish artist Gustav Hellberg. This is Hellberg’s first solo show with the gallery. The foundations of Hellberg’s artistic practice lie in the public sphere, where he explores the interactions between people, artworks and public spaces. His sculptures also explore hierarchical structures within society, and how they affect each of us at an individual level. Many of his best-known works have transformed public institutions and structures: for example, turning Stockholm’s City Library into a lighthouse, or turning the façade of Helsingborg’s Dunkers Kulturhaus into an enormous statistical indicator that counts visitors coming and going from the building. As well as these public commissions, he has created highly charged installations within galleries. For example, in 2008, he presented Privileged situation – utopian vision in Stockholm, an interactive light installation in which gallery visitors moved through a pitch-black forest of invisible sensor beams. As visitors triggered these sensors, a thin ray of light hit them. The effect was to be constantly followed by light, and yet be permanently surrounded by darkness. more...

Hamish Morrison Galerie is delighted to present an exhibition of new paintings by Paul Pretzer. Milch und Mortadella is Pretzer’s third solo show with the gallery, and follows his extremely successful solo presentation at VOLTA New York earlier this year. Pretzer’s characters and scenarios seem disturbingly familiar. They lead us to the trails of ancient, everlasting stories which have accompanied us since time immemorial. It seems as if Pretzer has distilled the essences of various literary genres and different styles of painting into his own alchemical process, adding that secret substance, known only to the artist, that enables the artist to transform them into his own individual imagery . more...

Hamish Morrison Galerie is delighted to present a new series of works on paper by Ronald de Bloeme in the gallery’s office space. De Bloeme borrows freely from the worlds of advertising and commercial design. He takes logos that have numbed us with their ubiquity, manipulates them in Photoshop, and then turns the resulting compositions into large-format, glossy paintings that mimic the flatness of product packaging or billboards. In de Bloeme’s hands, these logos take on a life entirely separate from the one they were intended for: altered, undermined and infringed by his control over them. As a result, his images almost always seem familiar to us, without us ever quite knowing why – until we get home and pick up a tube of toothpaste, or a bank statement, or a pack of cigarettes. more...

Hamish Morrison Galerie is delighted to present a new exhibition by Mikala Dwyer. This is her second solo show with the gallery, and follows on from major installations at this year’s Sydney and Adelaide Biennales. For several years now, Dwyer has been interested in the occult, creating pieces in which, for example, palm readers ply their trade, or circles of strange objects become loaded with witchy resonance. The current installation raises her interest in magic and parallel worlds to new levels. Using all her signature materials, she creates a compound that takes us across boundaries of time, space and geography. more...

Menglesis has taken over the whole office, turning it into part-gallery, part-artist’s studio and part-apartment. His drawings spill off the paper and across the walls; smaller works-in-progress creep around the windows; and there’s a couch for viewers to sit down, grab a beer, and watch videos. A single figure runs through the entire installation – an emaciated male of unclear age, topped with an absurd late-eighteenth century wig. He appears again and again in three-quarter profile, setting up strange vignettes that never quite resolve themselves into full stories. One could read a political element into Menglesis’s skeletal protagonist: the Holocaust, starvation in sub-Saharan Africa, Srebrenica, and anorexia all come to mind. But in fact, Menglesis’s repeated figure aspires to a very different conversation: a dialogue with the ultra-detailed, hyper-real comic books of the 1990s. more...
